September and October are the two months when Iceland quietly delivers everything the summer crowds came for — at a fraction of the price, on empty roads, with the aurora already back in the sky. The price drop happens on 1 September
This is the single biggest argument for autumn, and it is not a marketing line — it is how our pricing calendar works. High-season rates run through June, July and August. On 1 September every vehicle in the fleet returns to its low-season daily rate, and the difference is dramatic on the larger vehicles.

You still get real daylight
The fear about autumn is darkness. It is misplaced for September and only partly true for October. Iceland loses daylight fast after the equinox, but the starting point is high.

Even at the end of October you have more usable daylight than a December visitor gets at midday. And the light itself is better: the sun stays low, so you get golden-hour conditions for hours rather than minutes. Photographers deliberately come in autumn for this.
The northern lights are already back
Aurora season in Iceland is dictated by darkness, not by cold. From roughly 20 August the nights get dark enough again, and by late September you have genuinely long dark windows. September is often the best aurora month of the entire year, because equinox periods historically produce stronger geomagnetic activity.
The practical advantage of autumn hunting over midwinter hunting is the weather. Cloud cover is lower in September than in December or January, and the roads are clear, so if the forecast shows a hole in the cloud 90 minutes east of you, you can actually drive there. That is exactly what a rental car is for — the aurora does not appear above your hotel on request.

Autumn is a closing window, and the order in which things shut matters for planning.

Weather: honest expectations
Autumn is when Iceland's weather stops being polite. September averages around 8–10 °C in the south and October around 4–7 °C, which is mild — the issue is not temperature but wind and rain. The first serious Atlantic depressions arrive in late September, bringing gusts that can exceed 25 m/s.
Two practical consequences. First, check road.is and vedur.is every morning before you drive; a red wind warning is a reason to change your plan, not to push through. Second, hold your car door with both hands when opening it in a gusty car park. Wind-torn doors are the most common damage claim in Iceland and they are not covered by basic insurance anywhere on the island.

Roof tents work into mid-September and get uncomfortable after that. From October, a campervan with a heater or a hotel bed is the honest recommendation.
Booking in autumn: what actually changes
Availability is far better than in summer, but the good vehicles still go first — particularly the 4x4 SUVs during the September aurora peak. Booking two to four weeks ahead is usually enough, against two to three months for July.
