This covers everything: battery failure, lights not working, wipers, engine issues, or any mechanical fault. We are available around the clock, every day of the year.

Do not call 112 for car problems. Iceland's emergency number is for life-threatening situations only (police, fire, ambulance).

If a breakdown is caused by driver negligence or an uninsured situation, the following costs apply:

  • Towing — 220 ISK per km from our Keflavik office
  • Recovery from sand, mud or snow — quoted individually
  • Lost or locked-in keys — quoted individually
  • Flat battery — quoted individually
  • Repairs for uninsured damage (e.g. water entering the engine) — at cost

All towing distances are calculated from our Keflavik office, as all mechanics and replacement vehicles depart from there.

Pickup and return is at our Keflavik office — 8 minutes from the airport. When you land, our driver will be waiting in the arrivals hall with the Aurora Car Rental sign.

For return, we recommend arriving at the office at least 2.5 hours before your departure flight. The airport shuttle is free and included in your rental.

If you need to arrange a return outside our standard area, contact us 24/7 at +354 777-5600.

Every rental includes full coverage — no upsells at pickup:

  • OC — third-party liability (required by Icelandic law)
  • PAI — personal accident insurance for you and your passengers
  • CDW — collision damage waiver, zero excess for 4WD vehicles
  • SCDW — super CDW, zero excess included
  • GP — gravel protection (windscreen, headlights, paintwork from flying stones)
  • TP — theft protection

Regardless of insurance coverage, the driver is always financially responsible for:

  • River and water crossings — not covered by any policy
  • Tyre damage — punctures, blowouts, rim damage
  • Underbody damage — undercarriage and chassis
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Off-road driving outside permitted routes
  • Damage during active storm or sandstorm warnings

Optional Tyre Protection (3,000 ISK/day) can be added to cover tyre and rim damage.

Payment is made at our office when you pick up the car. We offer two payment options:

  • Cash (ISK or EUR) — standard price as listed
  • Credit/debit card — available at the office during pickup, price is 20% higher than the cash rate (card processing fee)

No payment is required to make a booking — you pay only when you collect the car.

Full-to-full. The car is handed over with a full tank — return it full. Any missing fuel is charged at the current Icelandic pump price.

Yes — child seats must be requested in advance when booking. We have seats suitable for children from 6 months to 4 years and older.

Icelandic law requires all young children to travel in an approved child safety seat.

Most of our 4x4 vehicles can handle gravel F-roads open to smaller SUVs. Always check road.is before heading into the highlands — F-roads are seasonal and closures are enforced.

⚠ River crossings are not covered by any insurance and are the driver's full responsibility.

Since January 2026, Iceland charges approximately 7 ISK per driven kilometre. It appears as a separate, clearly itemised line on your final invoice — no hidden markup.

Typical costs: 1,000 km → ~7,000 ISK  |  Ring Road loop (~1,332 km) → ~9,300 ISK.
This charge is largely offset by lower fuel prices across Iceland introduced at the same time.
