Jökulsárlón and Diamond Beach

Jökulsárlón itself is free to visit and open year-round. In winter the lagoon is quieter, the icebergs often carry a deeper blue, and the low sun makes the whole scene glow for hours. Directly across Route 1 is Diamond Beach, where chunks of glacier ice wash up on black volcanic sand — the "diamonds". Park in the marked lots on either side of the bridge; do not stop on the road itself, and keep well back from the water, as sneaker waves here are genuinely dangerous.

Just up the road, the smaller Fjallsárlón lagoon is worth the short detour and is usually far less crowded. Both are reachable on the same paved Route 1 that brought you east — no F-roads involved, which matters because F-roads are closed all winter anyway.
