Iceland Driving Distances and Times — A Realistic Planning Chart

Direct answer: Iceland's Ring Road is about 1,330 km and takes 16–17 hours of pure driving in summer — plan at least 7 days, ideally 10. Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík is 50 km (45 min), Reykjavík to Vík 187 km (2 h 30), Vík to Jökulsárlón 190 km (2 h 20) and Akureyri to Reykjavík 390 km (about 5 h). Add 15–20% to Google Maps times for stops and road works in summer, and multiply by 1.3–1.5 in winter.

Google Maps says Reykjavík to Höfn is under six hours. On paper, that is true. In reality you will stop at Seljalandsfoss, get stuck behind a camper van on a one-lane bridge, pull over for a photo of Icelandic horses and fill up at a petrol station in Vík. Suddenly it is eight hours and the light is going. This chart from Aurora Car Rental Iceland gives you the realistic numbers between every major stop, so your itinerary works in real life — not just on a screen.

Why Google Maps Times Are Optimistic in Iceland

Route-planning apps assume you drive at the legal limit the whole way. Iceland's limits are already low: 90 km/h on paved roads, 80 km/h on gravel and 50 km/h in towns (often 30 km/h in residential streets). Then add the things the apps do not count:

  • One-lane bridges — dozens on Route 1 in the south and east. The car closest to the bridge has priority, so you wait.
  • Road works — summer is construction season, with gravel sections and traffic lights.
  • Wind — gusts above 20 m/s near Kjalarnes, Hafnarfjall and under Öræfajökull force you to slow down or stop.
  • Stops — almost every 30 minutes there is a waterfall, viewpoint or canyon worth getting out for.
  • Winter conditions — snow, ice, short daylight and closures from road.is.

Our rule of thumb: add 15–20% in summer, multiply by 1.3 in autumn and spring, and by 1.5 in mid-winter (November to February).

Popular Detours and Day Trips from Reykjavík

Most visitors do not drive the whole Ring Road. These are the most common shorter trips and how long they really take.

Trip One way Realistic summer Best as
KEF → Blue Lagoon 20 km 20 min Arrival / departure day
Golden Circle loop (Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss) ≈230 km loop 3 h 30 driving Full day
Reykjavík → Seljalandsfoss / Skógafoss 130 / 155 km 1 h 45 / 2 h 10 Long day or overnight in Vík

Reykjavík → Jökulsárlón (and back) 375 km 5 h each way Never as a day trip

How Many Hours a Day Should You Drive?

We recommend a maximum of 3–4 hours of driving per day in summer and 2–3 hours in winter, when daylight can be as short as 4–5 hours in December. More than that and you see Iceland through the windscreen. Practical day budgets:

  • 7 days — Ring Road possible, but long days of 4–5 hours. Skip the Westfjords and most detours.
  • 10 days — the sweet spot for the Ring Road plus Snæfellsnes or the Golden Circle.
  • 4–5 days — focus on the South Coast to Jökulsárlón and the Golden Circle instead of the full loop.
  • Winter, any length — stick to the south and west; the north and east can close for days.

Road Tax: Add 7 ISK per Kilometre to Your Budget

Since 2026, every car in Iceland pays a kilometre-based road fee of about 7 ISK per km. It is charged on the distance you actually drive, so your route choice affects the price. Here is what typical trips add:

Itinerary Typical total km Road tax (7 ISK/km)
Golden Circle + South Coast to Vík (4 days) ≈700 km ≈4,900 ISK
South Coast to Jökulsárlón and back (5–6 days) ≈1,000 km ≈7,000 ISK
Ring Road with detours (10 days) ≈1,800 km ≈12,600 ISK
Ring Road + Snæfellsnes + Westfjords (14 days) ≈2,800 km ≈19,600 ISK

Five Tips for Realistic Planning

  1. Check road.is and vedur.is every morning — closures and wind warnings change daily.
  2. Fill up when the tank is half empty — in the east and north, stations can be 100+ km apart.
  3. Do not drive after dark in winter if you can avoid it — black ice is invisible.
  4. Book the night near the day's last sight — e.g. sleep in Vík or Kirkjubæjarklaustur, not Selfoss, before Jökulsárlón.
  5. Keep one buffer day — weather in Iceland will take one from you sooner or later.
