Most travellers to Iceland never actually need a Hilux. If your plan is the classic Ring Road loop with day trips to the south coast, Golden Circle and Snæfellsnes, a Dacia Duster is more than enough car, and the money you save goes a long way in an expensive country. The Hilux earns its keep on a specific kind of trip: serious Highland exploration with river fords, remote gravel tracks, and the confidence of extra ground clearance and a locking capability when the road effectively disappears. Booking a Hilux "just in case" usually means paying five times as much for capability you'll never use.

A critical rule for anyone tempted to push a smaller car too far: river crossings are never covered by standard insurance in Iceland. Water damage to the engine is excluded from CDW on every rental in the country. So if your route genuinely requires fording rivers — think F208 to Landmannalaugar from the south, or the tracks into Þórsmörk — you don't just want the Hilux, you need it, both for capability and to avoid a repair bill that can exceed the car's value.

Where you're legally allowed to drive each

Iceland's law is strict and worth understanding before you book. All F-roads (the ones prefixed with "F") legally require a 4x4 vehicle — a 2WD car is not permitted, and your insurance is void the moment you enter one in the wrong car. Both the Duster and the Hilux are 4x4s, so both are legally allowed on F-roads. The real difference is which F-roads are sensible for each.

Easier, well-graded routes like F35 (Kjölur) have no major river crossings and are comfortable in a Dacia Duster during summer. Harder routes with fords — F208, F206, F249, F210 — are Hilux territory. And one absolute rule everywhere in Iceland: off-road driving is illegal and heavily fined, no matter which vehicle you rent.
