Landmannalaugar sits in Iceland's central highlands — a landscape of multicoloured rhyolite mountains, steaming hot springs, ancient lava fields and crystal-clear rivers. It is one of the most stunning places on Earth, and it is only reachable by 4x4. This guide covers everything you need to know about driving there from Keflavik, including route options, river crossings, and what to expect.
What Makes Landmannalaugar So Special?
The name translates roughly as "the people's pools" — a reference to the natural geothermal hot springs where Icelanders have bathed for centuries. But the hot springs are only one part of what makes Landmannalaugar extraordinary.
The surrounding mountains are composed of rhyolite — a volcanic rock that creates colours unlike anything else in Iceland. Deep reds, burnt oranges, yellows, greens and purples cover the hillsides. Combined with black lava fields from a 15th-century eruption, steam rising from geothermal vents, and emerald rivers winding through it all, Landmannalaugar looks like a planet that isn't quite Earth.
It is also the starting point of the Laugavegur Trail, rated one of the world's best multi-day hikes.
How to Get to Landmannalaugar from Keflavik
There are two main driving routes. Both require a 4x4.
Route 1: F208 (Fjallabak Nature Reserve) — Recommended
Take the Ring Road east from Keflavik to Hella (approximately 100 km), then turn north onto the F208 Fjallabak route. This is the most popular approach — approximately 230 km total from Keflavik, with around 80 km on rough F-road including two river crossings.
The F208 crosses the Þverá river — typically knee-deep and fast-flowing. All vehicles must cross through the water. Stop before entering, assess the depth, and engage low-range 4WD. Drive slowly and steadily without stopping. If the crossing looks too deep (more than 50 cm), wait — conditions change within hours.
Route 2: F225 from the North (via Sprengisandur)
The Sprengisandur route (F26) through Iceland's interior is longer, more remote and more demanding — suited for experienced highland drivers or those combining Landmannalaugar with a full highland traverse. Not recommended for a first-time visit.
Driving the F208 — What to Expect
| Section | Distance | Surface | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keflavik → Hella (Ring Road) | ~100 km | Paved | Easy, 1 hour |
| Hella → F208 junction | ~10 km | Paved/gravel | Easy |
| F208 to first river crossing | ~40 km | Rough gravel | Slow, rocky sections |
| Þverá river crossing | — | River ford | 4x4 essential, assess first |
| River to Landmannalaugar | ~30 km | Rough lava track | Slow — allow 1.5 hours |
Total driving time from Keflavik: approximately 4–5 hours each way, depending on stops and river conditions. Plan for a full day (12+ hours) or overnight at the Landmannalaugar hut.
What to Do at Landmannalaugar
Natural hot spring bath: The hot spring runs directly into a cold river — mix your own temperature by choosing where you sit. Free, always open (water level varies). Bring a swimsuit and towel.
Laugahraun lava field walk: A 30-minute loop through the 1477 Laugahraun lava field — twisted basalt formations dusted with green moss. Eerie and beautiful.
Brennisteinsalda summit hike: 2–3 hours return, climbing the multicoloured volcano that defines the Landmannalaugar skyline. Views from the top are extraordinary on clear days.
Laugavegur Trail: The 55 km trail to Þórsmörk takes 3–5 days. If you're doing the full hike, arrange to have someone pick up your car from Landmannalaugar, or hire a shuttle for your return.

Frequently Asked Questions
When does the road to Landmannalaugar open?
The F208 to Landmannalaugar typically opens in late June and closes again in late September or early October, depending on conditions. The exact dates vary each year. Always check road.is before your trip. The route is closed in winter — do not attempt it outside the open season.
Can a Dacia Duster drive to Landmannalaugar?
Yes — the Dacia Duster is a capable 4x4 that handles the F208 route regularly in good summer conditions. The key factors are the river crossing depth (varies with rainfall and snowmelt) and the driver's experience with 4WD technique. If it is your first river crossing, slow and steady wins. Aurora Dacia Dusters come ready for highland driving.
How deep are the river crossings on the way to Landmannalaugar?
The Þverá river crossing on the F208 is typically 30–60 cm deep in normal summer conditions, but can rise significantly after heavy rain or during snowmelt. Always stop before entering, walk the crossing to check depth if unsure, and check road.is for current reports. Never enter a crossing that looks too deep or fast.
Is there a guided tour to Landmannalaugar?
Yes — bus tours from Reykjavík operate in summer (typically July–September). However, guided tours spend limited time at Landmannalaugar and do not allow for hiking or overnight stays. With a 4x4 rental from Aurora, you arrive on your own schedule, stay as long as you want, and have the option to overnight at the mountain hut.
