Iceland’s Unique Wildlife
Iceland may seem like a barren land of fire and ice, but it’s home to a surprising variety of wildlife. Here’s what you can spot on your Icelandic adventure.
Puffins 🐦
Iceland is home to the world’s largest puffin colony — around 8-10 million birds. The best time to see them is May to August. Top spots: Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar), Látrabjarg cliffs in the Westfjords.
Arctic Fox 🦊
Iceland’s only native land mammal. Shy and elusive, they’re best spotted in the Westfjords, particularly in the Arctic Fox Center near Súðavík.
Reindeer 🦌
Found in East Iceland, reindeer roam freely across the highlands. They were introduced from Norway in the 18th century.
Whales 🐋
Iceland is one of the best whale-watching destinations in the world. Species include humpback, minke, and even blue whales. Best departure points: Húsavík (the whale watching capital) and Reykjavik.
Horses 🐴
The Icelandic horse is a unique breed found nowhere else. Small, sturdy, and friendly — you’ll see them all across the countryside.
